24: (3/4-inch) slices French bread baguette

1: (5-oz.) jar sharp pasteurized process cheese spread

1: tablespoon all purpose flour

1: teaspoon dry mustard

1/8: teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne)

6: tablespoons margarine or butter, softened

2: tablespoons mayonnaise

1: teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1: garlic clove, minced

1: (6-oz.) can crabmeat, drained

Directions

1 Arrange bread slices in single layer on ungreased cookie sheet. Broil 4 to 6 inches from heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly browned on 1 side. Remove from broiler. Turn slices over; cool completely.
2 Meanwhile, in medium bowl, combine all remaining ingredients except crabmeat; mix until well blended and smooth. Stir in crabmeat.
3 Spread mixture on untoasted sides of bread, covering completely. Leaving slices on cookie sheet, freeze at least 30 minutes or until firm.
4 Cut slices in half crosswise; separately slightly. Broil frozen appetizers 4 to 6 inches from heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until puffed, bubbly and lightly browned.

If these appetizers broil too quickly, they will still be cold in the center; if they broil too slowly, the filling melts rather than puffs and the appetizers don’t brown. Adjust the broiler rack as needed to get the optimum results.

Prepared from start to finish, these appetizers require only a short freezing time; however, they can be assembled up to one month ahead and stored in the freezer. Be sure to broil them while they are frozen.

Garnish the serving platter with fresh herbs and/or red bell pepper cutouts.
